The story gets... more complex in the second half, Nate, and there are a number of Wolfe's trademarked casual comments that make you completely reappraise something from four hundred pages ago (see also There Are Doors and Free Live Free). I'm curious to see what you say when you're done (and perhaps also when you read the fifth book of the four book series, Urth of the New Sun).

Nate, you might know about this already, but Wolfe wrote a book called "The Castle of the Otter" which is a collection of essays about the writing of "The Book of the New Sun." It's very cool.

Titles of some of the chapters:
The Feast of Saint Catherine
Heliscope
Onomastics, the Study of Names

To me the best chapter is the one entitled "Words Weird and Wonderful," where Gene gives you, chapter by chapter, the definitions of some of the more archaic words. VERY VERY cool. Unfortuneatly, it does not cover "Citadel of the Autarch."

Dang it, now I want to read these books again! It's been at least 10 years since I read them last...
